Over 20 years ago, Renee and Burt purchased a beautiful lake front lot on Lake Wylie where they could build a temporary retreat knowing they would one day build a captivating and warm timber frame home.  The temporary retreat was designed and built conventionally to one day become the attached garage to the future house; but in the meantime, it would house two small bedrooms, a sitting area, bathroom and kitchen.

Like many TIMBERPEG® homeowners, Burt and Renee first visited a Timberpeg Open Home event to experience and appreciate the true unique beauty.  Then after more than seven years, they came back and engaged Bruce Hafley of Timberpeg Carolina to begin the design of the main house.

The design challenge proposed to Bruce was to architecturally, aesthetically and functionally join the ‘garage’ to the new timber framed home.  Because the garage location and shape was set, Bruce used a combination of architectural gable shapes to creatively blend with shed dormers to marry the two structures.  Additionally space was gained by converting the garage attic into a bonus room with second floor access from the main house.

The original garage was also in need of repair, so the vinyl siding/trim was stripped and replaced with the same prestained cedar clapboard siding, trim and shinges as the new house.  The garage roof had reached its life expectancy as well and was stripped and replaced with new 40 year architectural shingles.  And lastly, the windows were replaced with higher-end and house matching Andersen 400 series double hung Low E windows.

While the front marries nicely together, it’s the rear of the house where you can truly appreciate views of the lake.  And some of the best morning sunrise views are captured from the second floor master bedroom while lying in bed.  A large gliding patio door provides ample light and majestic views through the treetops overlooking the large and long lake views.  What better way to bring this outdoor beauty indoors than by blending the two with the natural timber frame structure.
